#131 Maleficent is #brilliant

Maleficent (2014) –

“A vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child may be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.”

This film ‘Maleficent‘ has been on my watch list since I saw the trailer early this year, it was in the cinema in May as seen by the photo above (I believe this is the poster used for advertising), I missed the boat with the cinema so have been waiting for it to come on sky & finally a couple of days ago (it was a Sunday evening = film night) & the boyfriend & I watched it.

It was great and it was well worth the wait, the film really shone the light on the story of Maleficent & who she is, why she becomes so sad & evil. Of course Angelina Jolie who plays Maleficent is brilliant in it, so is Elle Fanning who plays Sleeping Beauty & then the three fairies are done very well with well-known faces including Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton & Lesley Manville. It is funny normally I am good with faces but after looking at IMDB for the synopsis I realized Sam Riley was in it too – he has quite a big part in it & is lovely in it.

I always like to be surprised when I watch films, the trailer gave a lot of the story away but then did keep a lot of things hidden too & not knowing all of the faces is an added bonus! The Narration in the film defiantly gives it something extra especially the last line of the film, if you have seen it you will know what I am talking about & if not watch & listen.

A great film I was super excited to watch & was not disappointed, a big recommend!!

#122 Reviewing some films I have recently watched

The Counselor (2013)

“A lawyer finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking.”

I watched The Counselor on a recent Saturday night with my sister & I was really looking forward to it especially as my mum has watched earlier in the day & said it was great! It was a great film, with a great cast & a brilliant director that is Ridley Scott I just felt that once it all started to unravel & then clear up – it felt like a quick clear up & sweep up under the carpet. For me it was just another story showing the impact of one bad choice/being greedy & what happens when you mix your life with drugs. If that is what Ridley Scott was going for then he hit the nail straight on top of the head but I was just wanting a little bit more, saying that I did think it was good & would watch it again if my Dad or Boyfriend wanted to watch it. Plus Cameron Diaz was absolutely brilliant in it as well as Michael Fassbender who is just brilliant in everything he does + the cast was a group of good lookers!

Philomena (2013)

philomena frontsmall

“A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.”

Philomena, another film recommended to me after my mum had watched it. I had heard of it & then when I realised it was on Sky Demand – I watched a couple of lazy Sundays ago. It was a lovely film, it warmed your heart, made you smile but also cry. Like everything Judy Dench is in she blew the film away with her great presence & acting skills & they really emphasised her face in this film, a lot of close-ups which showed just how blue her eyes were. A lovely film and it was a film that was based on true events which made people aware that this keeps happening as Philomena is a real soul. If your feeling like a gentle, lovely film is what you need – this one is for you but be aware that you may have a cry or two.

American Hustle (2013)

“A con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild FBI agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia.”

I was so excited when I realized this film finally came on Sky movies. It is a brilliant film – the trailer did not give this film justice. It is so much more then what the film shows & that is what I love about a trailer, giving you an idea of what you think the film will be but actually the film is just so much more. Such a good film & I really easy watch, even thought it kept you gripped it wasn’t heard to follow or understand. Perfect mix of good acting (with that line-up you think no less), great story line, great costumes!! JUST GREAT.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

“When Thor’s love interest gets cursed with a powerful object, Thor must protect it before an army and it’s ruthless leader try to get their hands on it to take over the remains of Earth”

I finished watching this last night & I loved it. Another great Marvel film with a very good twist at the end. If you watch this you will know what I am talking about. Get involved & watch this because it seems Marvel films are doing a really good job!

Enough Said (2013)

“A divorced woman who decides to pursue the man she’s interested in learns he’s her new friend’s ex-husband.”

I remember watching the trailer for Enough Said & after it finished, I really just wanted to watch it there & then. It has a great cast including one of my favorite actors of all time Mr James Gandolfini – who of course passed away suddenly on 19th June 2o13 three months before Enough Said was released. For me this

The Heat (2013)

“An uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord.”

I honestly did not think this film would be as funny as it was! A great Saturday afternoon watch when you are feeling a little poorly from the last nights antics. Would recommend over & over again, this film is great & with a brilliant women duo that is Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, both being some of my favorite actress. They are so elegant, brilliant & hilarious & together make a great film. Watch, watch, watch you will not be disappointed.

Gravity (2013)

“A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after a catastrophe destroys their shuttle and leaves them adrift in orbit.”

After finishing work early & the weather being pretty horrid – I decided I finally had some time to watch this film. Yes I was late to the party but with so much hype around it & reading in my Empire magazine just how they filmed it, I was very excited & was not disappointed. It was brilliant, kept you on the edge of your seat – brilliant acting from Sandra Bullock & George Clooney – a great mix as well. I now understand what all the hype was for & I am so glad there was so much hype because this film was great!!!!

#114 American Horror Story

American Horror Story “An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a haunted house, an insane asylum, a witch coven and a freak show.” is my new craze & it is brilliant. Yes I know I am little late to the scene, (first series coming out in 2011) but luckily I have Netflix & have watched the first two series & they are so amazing, scary but amazing. Ryan Murphy co-writes it which for me is an added bonus as I love a bit of Glee, what I love as well so much is the fact that every series centers on a different story which is in a different location but does share some of the actors from the last series before, which mucks my mind even more but I guess that is the point. Synopsis below, it doesn’t give much away but that is the point – everything is a surprise.

I cannot wait to start watching the third series, it is not on Netflix so will have to find another way of watching it & whilst doing research on IMDB have seen that there is a new series coming out, series four will be airing the american screens in near October 2014 & will go over to 2015 which is great! Each series has around 12 to 13 episodes on it, so it is a perfect amount of episodes for a series especially being as they are full of thriller.

I also have to mention about the brilliant cast that makes up this great series including Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Lily Rabe, Emma Roberts, Jamie Brewer, Kathy Bates, Sarah Pulson, Angela Bassett, Zachary Quinto – This is just naming a few & you can see from this just how brilliant American Horror story has got it. Partly one of the reason I watch it because of how great the acting is!

Please get involved in this series, you will not be disappointed.

#113 Book Reviews

So I have just recently got back off holiday & since my kind of summer holiday for most of it is sitting by a pool & enjoying the sun whilst reading a book, I got through a lot of books including;

-Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Who are you?

What have we done to each other?

These are the questions Nick Dunne finds himself asking on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police suspect Nick. Amy’s friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn’t true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they weren’t made by him. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what really did happen to Nick’s beautiful wife?

– The fault in our stars by John Green

“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once.”

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

– The Room by Emma Donoghue

Jack is five. He lives with his Ma. They live in a single, locked room. They don’t have the key.

Jack and Ma are prisoners.

– The husband’s secret by Liane Moriarty

Mother of three and wife of John-Paul, Cecilia discovers an old envelope in the attic. Written in her husband’s hand, it says: to be opened only in the event of my death.

Curious, she opens it – and time stops.

John-Paul’s letter confesses to a terrible mistake which, if revealed, would wreck their family as well as the lives of others.

Cecilia – betrayed, angry and distraught – wants to do the right thing, but right for who? If she protects her family by staying silent, the truth will worm through her heart. But if she reveals her husband’s secret, she will hurt those she loves most . . .

– Bared to you by Sylvia Dylan. (first of a third/fourth part series)

Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness – beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily…

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other’s most private wounds… and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn’t tear us apart…

All of these books where brilliant & kept me guessing, I would recommend all of these books to anybody because how great they where. They are all completely different stories & addressing all different issues, which is what I love. I am currently reading the second book of Sylvia Dylan three/four part series & even though I have only been reading it for three evenings whilst in bed, I am nearly finished – which just shows how great her series is, the book draws you in!

Get your hands on all of these books & I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

112 Trailers, which I thought were pretty damn good.

I love going onto the IMDB site because for me it brings lots of fun into what is going on in the world of film & television. A lot of these films have great coverage & great publicity, it also has some great people in it which for me I love. I would recommend watching all of these trailers & see what you think, if you enjoy then go watch it because trailers for me are there to entice & they have done that for me – so I will watch & slowly review these great films.

#111 Some must see films from 25 years ago to a year ago

So it is that time again, to talk over a couple of the last films I have seen recently. I have a good selection of films here, some that were released last year & then some definite old ones that were released in 1989, 25 years ago & is still talked about now, which in my eyes are seen as a classic & of course have the great Tom Hanks – which is a golden icon in the Hollywood world. Then you have the 1996 The birdcage, which features some brilliant actors that are still making brilliant work now. You have a good selection of films that are all sorts of different kind of film & read more to find out all about them…

– Turner & Hooch (1989)

“A detective must adopt the dog of a dead man to help him find the murderer.”

For me when a film is talked about 25 years on, that is going to be a great & this film is. It is a Disney film & let’s be honest all Disney films are great in the film world. Then you have Tom Hanks & a lot of actors in this film that are brilliant & have done a lot of great work. This film did not disappoint & it was such an easy watch, it was Sunday afternoon which was a very chilled day, it was just the perfect kind of film that I would watch over & over again.

– About Time (2013)

“At the age of 21, Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think.”

maxresdefault ded2368eb8e85e147d569b951d37e2dc

This film has been on my watch list for over a year & it did not disappoint. I love a good romance, especially when it is featured in a film, so just assumed it would be that & it wasn’t – it was so much more. I watched this film with my boyfriend & it made me so surprised, it was so much more than a romantic film & it was brilliant. My boyfriend who rarely mentions film, talked about this a couple of times the next day saying how good it was & how much it made you think. It was full of emotion & defiantly makes you think, how sacred time is – because it really is.

– A.C.O.D (2013)

“A grown man caught in the crossfire of his parents’ 15-year divorce discovers he was unknowingly part of a study on divorced children and is enlisted in a follow-up years later, which wreaks new havoc on his family.”

I remember seeing a trailer for this film & thinking that looks hilarious. It was stupidly funny & a great watch, with a hilarious cast but I was not a fan of the end, not sure if maybe I missed something but I am not a fan of the end being left on a cliffhanger, other than that it was a great, hilarious film!

– The Birdcage (1996)

“A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiance’s right-wing moralistic parents.”

Original Cinema Quad Poster - Movie Film Posters

My boyfriend John introduced me to this film, he could not believe I had not watched it – it was brilliant! A great cast, a great story & full of humor. This film is a must see watch, it has a great cast that play their parts so well including Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane, Dianne West, Dan Futterman, Calista Flockhart, Hank Azaria & so many more but you can see with this small list that this film is going to be brilliant. A must see film!

A good selection of brilliant films that are a blast from the past & some new ones that are brilliant. I would tell anyone to watch all of these films especially the older ones. Enjoy!

#107 Films I watched on the Aeroplane

So as I have written below in one of my earlier posts about my work travels in the USA I had the fun of the film Library when flying to Baltimore & flying back home & thought I would write about the films I watched to keep me entertained, they included;

– Saving Mr Banks (2013)

“Author P L Thraves reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins book for the big screen.”

This film for me looked so exciting & I was so happy to see it on the film library on the plane back from the USA to the UK. This film for me had so many emotions & it was so good, I finished this film, wanting to go get a cup of tea & to put it back on. It had so many different parts to it including a lot of different emotions were shared, I cried but I also laughed a lot & it is a great story that shows just how the lovely film Mary Poppins becomes to the big screen.

That and the fact that you are watching two different stories that are combined but you are not sure till about half way through how is what is so lovely about this film, you really get a feeling that you know all the characters & of course the amazing cast that they brought in for this film including Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Bradley Whitford, Ruth Wilson, Paul Gimatti & lots more. You can see from that list just how brilliant this film is going to be & was. I would defiantly recommend you to watch it & I will be purchasing on DVD to watch over & over again on a cool winter Sunday with a cup of tea of course.

– The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

“Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.”

This film is the second of four films & I could not wait to watch this, to see how different or similar it would be to the books. I already knew what the film would be about as I have read all three books. I can tell you it did not disappoint, it was very good & very similar to the book, nothing was left out – which for me is a frustration when film makers change the adaption of the book so much, in this case it did not happen.

The second film is the second installment of Katniss Everdeens journey into getting freedom & bless her – if she was a real person she would have probably had a breakdown by now. This film is full of action & gore which is what makes the, ‘The Hunger Games’ so iconic & it is displayed so well through the film. Of course the brilliant cast help makes this film a hit with the brilliant Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Jack Quiad, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson & lots more. – You can see it was a pretty well done film, with the cast alone.

A must see watch!

– That Awkward Moment (2014)

“Three best friends find themselves where we’ve all been – at the confusing moment in every dating relationship when you have to decide ‘so… where is this going?'”

A brilliant easy-going film, with some comedy, love & a slight emotion at times. Which for me is a perfect combination & a great cast including Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B Jordan, Imogen Poots & lots more. A perfect film if you are just in a chilled out mood, the perfect film for you.

– Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

“In 1985, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is himself diagnosed with the disease.”

For me this film was the must see a movie of 2013, it won a lot of awards at the Oscars including picking up lead male role & supporting actor for their performances in this film. This film had me smiling, crying & just staring into oblivion at times & I am so glad I watched it. The film included Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner, Dennis O’Hare, Michael O’Neil & Steve Zahn – including a lot more of course.

Brilliant & beautiful film is Dallas Buyers Club.

– Frozen (2013)

“Fearless optimist Anna teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.”

No wonder why this film is so big with everyone, it has a little bit for everything & is a perfect film for all ages. Another great Disney film with a great cast of voices including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Alan Tudyk & a lot more. A lot of work goes into make a cartoon film & once again the Disney art crew did a brilliant job.

A film that is great for all occasions & for all ages, Disney did it again!

A good selection of five films that I would recommend watching, there is something for everyone, which is always what you want.
