For a long time whilst I was at University, fellow students talked about this film ‘Saving private Ryan’, quotes were passed around, it was brought up in lectures as example, friends said how great of a film it was and recently at a family and friend BBQ where I and all the families were talking about their bucket lists of films and this one was on everyone’s and pretty near the top. Once I had watched it I realised why it was called a classic by so many and talked about for over a decade.
So what is ‘Saving private Ryan’ all about, well when you go onto IMDB the plot for the film is as follows. ‘Following the Normandy landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brother have been killed in action.’ The soldiers are on a mission to save Private Ryan. This film wasn’t just brilliant because of the story but because of the locations; this film was filmed in some outstanding locations such as Oxfordshire England, Ireland, Calvados France and then you have the cast, the cast of such talent; Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Jermey Davies, Matt Damon, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti, Dennis Farina and that is just the smallest amount.
When I watched this film, I didn’t realise the story was about saving a solider and I think that is why I enjoyed it so much because I had an idea about what this film was actually about and yet I knew it was going to be such a good film, the surprise was something extra. For me this film was pure brilliance and it is beautifully done, it has everything you want.
Please watch this film because even though it is a classic it is so much more than that. It’s great.
